Kermit the Frog once said, “It isn’t easy being green”. Being green may be difficult for Kermit but not for Matthews Book Company & McCoy Health Science Supply. Over the past three years Matthews & McCoy have made company wide changes in an effort to be more environmentally friendly.
According to TIMES magazine each office worker uses 10,000 pieces of copier paper annually. The heating, cooling and powering of offices accounts for 40% of carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. Each year computers use $1 billion worth of electricity while sitting idle. Numbers like these are a battle cry for action and Matthews & McCoy are responding to the call.
In 2005 our company set up a recycling program to monitor and reward departments that increased their recycling. Every department at Matthews & McCoy now recycles using individual and community recycling bins. The recycling doesn’t stop with paper. We also recycle all cardboard boxes and ink cartridges.
Matthews & McCoy realized it was not only important to recycle but also to reduce! In our book, less is more. To reduce paper usage all company printers are configured to print on both sides of the page. Internal communications and forms are transmitted through an intranet site and faxes are sent electronically directly from desktops. Our latest effort is switching to online bill paying and we are now asking our customers to let us send their invoices and credits electronically.
Power reduction is another continuous green effort for Matthews & McCoy. Over the past six years electricity use has been reduced by 23%. This reduction is a direct result of switching to efficient fluorescent lights, a new conveyor belt in the warehouse and digital thermostats. Currently, a committee within the company is devising a plan to further reduce power usage by 10%.
Even these small changes can have a large impact on the environment. As a company we know there is more we can do to save the environment and we will continue our efforts to go green.
