Abstract: The decreasing incidence of trauma in many areas of the world, combined with a move towards a reduction in trainees' working hours, has meant a dramatic lack of exposure to trauma for surgeons in training. There is therefore an urgent need for improved trauma management skills training amongst Higher Surgical Trainees (HST) and general surgeons. Recognizing the need for improved training, the International Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care (IATSIC) has initiated training courses around the world. This manual will act as a companion for those attending the IATSIC courses whilst simultaneously aiding the development of improved trauma skills in other general surgical consultants and HSTs. The course will be largely skills-based; the manual will focus on theoretical background information with sections illustrating key practical skills. It is likely that DSTS training will become compulsory for all UK surgical trainees within the next 2-3 years.
