Abstract:
Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Endocrinology systematically examines the normal and abnormal endocrinology of the pregnant and lactating female and of the fetus and neonate. This reference expands coverage of specific disorders and diseases beyond the current endocrinology content on the market, which in most cases has a paragraph or no mention at all about pregnancy or aspects of fetal/neonatal development. This must-have reference delves into the following four aspects: Part I - Maternal endocrine physiology during pregnancy and lactation reviews the normal changes that occur in endocrine physiology during pregnancy and lactation. For example, the pituitary gland enlarges (sometimes mistaken to imply a tumor or disease) and the output of certain hormones increases while others decline.Part 2 Fetal and neonatal endocrine physiology follows a similar flow as in the first section, with the focus on when the endocrine glands form in utero, when the hormones begin to be detectable in the circulation, and what roles they play in fetal physiology. Each chapter addresses changes that occur during the neonatal period. Animal data will be required to address gaps in knowledge where no human data are possible, especially during aspects of fetal development.Part 3 - Diagnosis and management of endocrine disorders in pregnancy, focusing on how pregnancy alters the presenting symptoms/signs and raises specific management issues. Gestational diabetes, and pregestational type 1 and 2 diabetes will of course be addressed. Other significant disorders to be discussed include hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease), hypoparathyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, vitamin D deficiency.Part 4 Endocrine disorders in the fetus and neonate includes how maternal endocrine disorders impact fetal or neonatal development (e.g., maternal hypercalcemia leading to fetal and neonatal hypoparathyroidism), but especially how primary endocrine disorders may manifest in the fetus and neonate.
